New research results show that switching to e-cigarettes or vaping may reduce adolescent smoker’s risk of dying from smoking-related health problems by as much as 21%. Since smoking is presently projected to be the cause of six million deaths worldwide every year, these results are significant.
An interesting fact is that this study was not funded by the tobacco or e-cigarette industry. The study was actually subsidized by the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the Cancer Intervention and Surveillance Modeling Network. In the research, adolescent smokers were defined as anyone born after the year 1997. Dr. David Levy, professor of oncology, stressed that the study focused on adolescents who vaped or smoked e-cigarettes regularly, not just once or twice. This study diverges from preceding research since participants were lumped together regardless of their experience with vaping or e-cigs.
These reports showcase an inconsistency with public and government attitude. Particularly following the FDA’s ruling to consider all vape and e-cig products as “tobacco products,” these studies will be especially significant to reveal the facts about vaping.
This is not the only study or leading researcher that has results in support of vaping/e-cig over traditional cigarette smoking. Medical leaders, such as Professor Munafo, have concluded that vaping releases smaller levels of harmful chemicals because tobacco smoke, found in cigarettes, is where dangerous chemicals exist. These elements can lead to brain damage and numerous other health concerns.
Although, Dr. Levy stresses a need for further long-term research on the health effects of vaping in adolescents, it seems, at least for now, to be a better alternative to traditional smoking. Studies in favor of vaping continue to be published, however at the same time the vaping market is facing pushback and federal regulation.
