As vaping continues its climb in popularity the deliberations go on about whether it’s safer than smoking tobacco products. Recently there are studies that are proving yes, vaping is a safer choice than tobacco cigarettes.
A new exploration was done by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), called “Nicotine without Smoke: Tobacco Harm Reduction.” The 200 page assessment confirmed the general health risks possibly associated with e-cigarettes was much lower than that of tobacco cigarettes. The RCP explained, “Some harm from sustained exposure to low levels of toxins over many years may yet emerge, but the magnitude of these risk relative to those of sustained tobacco smoking is likely to be small.” The study assessed that smoking vapor products posed a less than 5% risk in comparison to tobacco cigarettes.
As stated in the account the RCP recognized vaping has become a reliable channel for traditional tobacco smokers to quit smoking entirely or to effectively diminish their need for tobacco products. The report concluded that vaping has become more broadly used for smoking cessation than marketed Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRT).
The health problems caused by tobacco cigarettes is widely accepted due to thorough investigations and unrestricted media reports by the healthcare industry. Nicotine in tobacco cigarettes is addictive. Tobacco and countless other chemicals in cigarettes are known carcinogens. WebMD explains these chemicals are known to cause various illnesses including COPD, vascular disease, lung cancer, upper airway and esophageal cancer, and other serious conditions.
In comparison to tobacco cigarettes with their various hazardous chemicals, there are few ingredients in the e-liquids smoked in vaping products. The three main components are vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol and flavorings. All three have been used safely in common household products and food for many years. Propylene Glycol has been used as an ingredient in food coloring, a flavor carrier in processed foods, and in cosmetics and medicines. Vegetable glycerin is created from plant oils including coconut, palm, and soy. As an ingredient it has been used in lotions, shampoos, and toothpastes.
Another plus for E-cigarettes and other vape products, they contain no tobacco. One negative aspect is some e-liquids do contain nicotine. The amount can vary, but the most common is between 6mg and 24mg. Some E-liquids are nicotine-free. The vape smoker chooses the amount he prefers. This is a viable way for the tobacco cigarette smoker to lower his level of nicotine slowly, at his own pace.
An advantage for those around vapers, there is no second-hand smoke problems. The “smoke” from e-cigarettes is a vapor created when the e-liquid is heated. The smoke from traditional cigarettes contains tobacco and other hazardous chemicals posing a health risk to bystanders. The vapor created by e-cigarettes and other vaping products is tobacco-free, and carries no potential second-hand smoke health risks.
